Reaping the rewards

So we got back after a wonderful two week holiday back in Scotland only to find that the Veggie Patch had had a growth spurt!  Thank you so much to Juan and to the Cuffaris for watering whilst we were away.

Its a jungle - we have been trimming back the mustard greens, cilantro and zucchini. Check out Richard in the back there having a quiet Sunday afternoon moment.
I can't identify which branch belongs to which tomato plant :+)
So I think we have hit the jackpot as the location is ideal - the planters are in full sunlight all day long
and the soil is 'special' we got the Planter Mix soil at Great Soil in Escondido.

We have really started to reap the rewards of our labour as we are now harvesting:
  • Sun Cherry Tomatoes
  • Sungold Cherry Tomatoes
  • Zucchini (by the masses)
  • Artichokes
  • and the usual herbs and salad leaves
The taste of the veggies is great and it is very satisfying gathering produce every day and then eating it.  The children are excited about the produce and are starting to show more interest in veggies that they have previously poo-pooed.  I think this is also to do with the gardening classes they have at school which really fire them up.  Mr Hank is an inspiration for them - check out the PEC Garden website and Mr Hank on Twitter.

  1. Magnificent, Serena. Puts my little urban patch completely in the shade. Salad leaves all I am managing to harvest at the moment! Caroline x

  2. Well, this is terrific. What Californian bounty. As with BS6, so with BD20. Growth is more challenging here! Yesterday found a furry mouse in my raised bed nibbling through all my baby curly kale plants. Caroline might say 'thank goodness'! I managed to pick him/her up and remove her from the raised bed but not before s/he'd munched through most of the little seedling plants. Ah well, feeding the fellow creatures at least.
Your beds look wonderful. I hope Richard's present (on this theme) has arrived safely. Keep growing and flourishing! Lots of love..

  3. The heat and 12 hours of sun per day are the trump cards and don't really make it an equal playing field! Found a gopher hole just near the beds today. Very glad Richard added the chicken wire :+) They are rather lovely little animals to watch peaking out of their holes. We saw a skunk a couple of nights ago wandering about, they are beautiful creatures, black and white with such fluffy tails. You normally smell them rather than see them...
